Arabic Speakers' Perspective of Counseling in Speech-Language Pathology

Consent to Participate

1.
You are invited to participate in a research study investigating the experiences of Arabic-speaking families and caregivers of individuals with acquired neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders regarding their interactions with speech-language pathologists. Speech-language pathologists are also called speech therapists. They work with adults and children who have difficulty with speaking and swallowing. They can work in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, and clinics. Think of a family member who sought medical treatment for an illness (stroke, brain injury, dementia, cancer, infection, etc.) that caused sudden difficulty speaking, swallowing, or thinking. It is likely that he or she may have worked with a speech-language pathologist. If you were closely involved in their care, a speech-language pathologist may have spoken with you about these difficulties. This survey will ask you questions about that experience. Please read the following information carefully before agreeing to participate in this study.

Purpose: السبب
According to the U.S Census Bureau, approximately 1.3 million people in America speak Arabic at home. As the number of Arabic speakers continues to grow, it is important that speech-language pathologists are prepared to work with families that have unique cultural and linguistic differences. There is minimal research available regarding the experiences of Arabic speaking clients and their families in America. This study will investigate Arabic-speaking family members’ and caregivers’ counseling experiences with speech-language pathologists.
