CONTENT-RICH READING, TALKING & WRITING PRACTICES FOR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS IN INTEGRATED SOCIAL STUDIES & ENL SETTINGS (GRADES 4-12)
This 6-part hybrid series will explore research-based, content-rich reading, talking and writing skill-building practices for Multilingual and English Language Learners (MLs/ELLs) in integrated social studies/civics and ENL settings. Participants will explore and apply an integrated social studies/ENL teaching and learning cycle, ranging from reading and talking to build shared knowledge, sustained reading and interactional deconstruction of texts for comprehension purposes, coupled with opportunities for joint, collaborative and independent writing constructions. CTLE hours are available.

Since each practice is part of a connected, but nonlinear teaching and learning cycle, participants can choose to either join all sessions or just the session(s) that they are interested in attending the most plus session 1.
  • Session 1: (in person, 11/15/23; 9am-3pm): Introduce the LACI Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC), each phase in a cycle and how the phases support content-rich, language-learning practices in social studies and civics. • Session 2 (virtual, 12/13/23; 3pm-4:30pm): How to engage in Sustained Reading of content-rich texts through a series of reading practices, including modeled reading, shared reading, guided reading, collaborative reading and independent reading.
